How to Handle a Conflict With Your Superior
There may come a time during your career when you have to face a conflict with your superior. This person may be your shift leader, direct supervisor or someone who is above that person. The following are three tips for working your way through the conflict.
Talk to the Person
You'd be surprised how many situations can be resolved with a simple one-to-one conversation. The ordeal that you're experiencing may be a misunderstanding between you and your superior. The uneasiness that you feel could be a difference in personalities. You will never know unless you try to communicate with that person.
Follow the Chain of Command
If you have already spoken to your superior, and there seems to be no solution, then you need to take the next step. Document everything that occurs between you and this person, and then talk to that person's superior. That person may have a solution such as changing your shift or your duties. Most employers offer an open door policy that allows you to speak about the things that trouble you without having to deal with any retaliation or repercussions.
Speak to Labor Relations or Human Resources
If all else fails, you may have to take extreme measures. For instance, you may have to report harassment to human resources if you are experiencing such a thing. Human resources will conduct a thorough investigation and take action based on their findings. In the meantime, try not to let the situation cause you stress, and keep doing the best job you can do. The company will be less likely to let you go if you continue to perform as an asset to the establishment.
